Expedition
My solitary, more than half year long expedition began on 8th October 2000 and consisted of four stages of bicycle riding. These were in chronological order:I travelled by planes between the stages.
- Southern Europe and the Middle East (I stage - October-December 2000)
- Eastern Africa (II stage - January 2001)
- Nepal and India (III stage - February 2001)
- The Far East (IV stage - March-April 2001)
At the beginning I went by bus from Cracow in Poland to Rome in Italy. The box with my bicycle and bicycle bags were my only luggage. From the Eternal City I rode bicycle across Italy (680 km*), Greece (230 km), Turkey (1300 km), Syria (700 km), Jordan (400 km) and Israel (80 km) to Egypt (700 km) in three months. I used ferries three times on my way: Bari (Italy) - Patras (Greece), Pireus (Greece) - Kusadasi (Turkey), Sharm El-Sheik-Hurghada (Egypt).
With the beginning of the New Year (2001) I took a plane from Egypt to Uganda. The second stage of bicycle riding took place in Uganda (470 km) and Kenya (400 km).
At the end of January 2001 I flew from Kenya to Nepal. Nepal (310 km) and India (400 km) I watched sitting on my bicycle saddle in February 2001.
At the beginning of March 2001 I flew from India to Thailand. The last stage of pedalling was in Thailand (670 km), Malaysia (660 km) and Singapore (100 km). From Singapore, on 13th April 2001 I returned by plane to my home city Cracow.
During the expedition I sent reports from all visited countries. They were published on the Internet.
Several times on my way I used also other means of transport such as a bus, train, taxi, hitchhiking, mainly when I was forced by circumstances. I rode 7100 km by bicycle in all.
I had three main goals in my journey: natural wonders, remains of ancient civilizations, contemporary life of the people . I spent one third of all nights "in nature" in my tent, the rest mainly in cheap hotels. The expedition was totally finansed by myself (I had to sell my car).
These were just dry facts. To learn more about my interesting experiences you are invited to visit a photo gallery.
